At Least One Dead in Shooting at Washington Navy Yard

Last Updated: 10:08 AM ET

WASHINGTON — At least one person was fatally shot at a naval headquarters here on Monday, according to the Navy. The shooting also left several people injured, including one police officer, according to the police.

The officer, whose condition was unknown, was taken to a hospital. The gunman was barricaded, the police said. A helicopter lowered a basket down to the roof of one of the buildings and appeared to be taking away victims.

An individual fired shots at 8:20 a.m. at the Washington Navy Yard, in the southeastern part of the city, the Navy said on Twitter. Workers were told to shelter in place, and emergency personnel were on the scene.

The shooting occurred at the Naval Sea Systems Command’s headquarters, where about 3,000 service members, civilians and contractors work on the Navy’s fleet, the Navy said in a statement.

The Navy Yard is a secure military facility, with guards posted at gates and a large wall surrounding the buildings. It is about three-quarters of a mile from the Capitol building, and about a half-mile from Nationals Park, the home of Washington’s baseball team.
