Name: Shawn Harris
Age: 20
Height: 6’4
Job: Part-Time Associate at Footlocker/House of Hoops
School: Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey in New
Brunswick, NJ
Hometown: Union, NJ
Mascot: Scarlet Knight
Colors: Scarlet Red & White
Major: Economics and Communications Double Major
Class: 2015
Other Colleges I was accepted to: UCLA, Miami, Ohio State,
NYU, Fordham, and St. Johns. In the end, I chosed Rutgers because it saved my
parents the most money possible without jeopardizing a great education. I always
had that dream to go to an out of state college, but one thing I can say is
that I do not regret one bit coming to Rutgers. It’s a little what I like to
call “home away from home” type of school because everything you need is at
your disposal. The University basically spans across most of New Brunswick, as
well as parts of Piscataway giving you more than enough resources and
networking to use and acquire throughout your time there. The school’s
diversity in itself is a learning experience due to meeting various cultures
and people from different ethnic backgrounds daily. You’re a train ride from
Philly and a train ride from New York and the best part is you don’t have to go
home for anything, but if I need to its only thirty minutes from my hometown. A
lot of schools don’t have equivalent kinds of outlets around major cities such
as Rutgers.
Favorite Class: Anything that has relation to marketing and
the economy. I feel that knowing the trends of the economy and how to market
are really important assets in my life because of the career path I have
chosen. With the technological transitioning and modernization of this generation
I feel like it’s a necessity to keep up with the flow of how the economy is run
so you can maximize revenue and profit. I also feel that you have to be as
innovative as possible when promoting a brand, product, service, or whatever
the case may be because that’s how you will be able to stay ahead of the curve
.
Least Favorite Class: I hate financial classes. I just can’t
bring myself to do something that I hate, which is pushing numbers especially
when it comes time to get a job, I do not want to work 90 plus hours just to
eventually move up some amount of years later. I like learning about things
that interest and benefit me for the future and I know that’s not something I
want to do.
Freshman Experience: My freshman experience was amazing. It
is definitely something I would want to relive from the experiences to the
people I have met along the way. Freshman year was definitely one of the most
fun experiences because it’s so different from high school. It really was a
step up academically but college was everything I expected. Countless parties,
activities done, and people I've met during freshman year will be cherished
even to this day as I start my junior year. Advice that I can give to rising
freshman is to have the best time possible without sacrificing your learning
experience. Learn how to allocate your time wisely in college because that
literally is the most important thing you have in college. Meet new people, be
outgoing, and always remember to stay true to yourself. You don’t have to make
anyone like you or impress anyone, just being who you genuinely are will allow
for things to fall into place naturally and by things I mean friends,
networking, and your education, pretty
much anything that applies to the bettering of your life. When I was a freshman
I established myself with people that I could relate with mentally and
interests wise. Now my resources and networking is something I could only
imagine and it is still growing by the day.
My Roommate: I love my roommate, well now I can say
roommates, but my main roommate that I actually share a room with in my current
housing off campus has been a good friend of mine for years now. We basically
grew up together so at school it’s like we’re still back at home in Union. I
don’t even think I have any downs with him just ups because it’s always a
positive friendship.
What Makes Me Dare to Be Different: I’d say daring to be
different isn't something I go out my way to do. I feel that being different
should come naturally as if it’s an extension of yourself. Me personally, I
hate doing something that others do just because it’s trendy. I like to do
things that actually interest me and occasionally I may set a trend doing so,
but my main intention is being happy doing what I want to do. I want to live a
life where I can say that my legacy I left upon the world was so positive that
it impacted society in this way or that way. You can say my real reason to dare
to be different is to show people that nothing in this world can stop you from
achieving your goals. I want to be a role model or stepping stone for people to
realize that life is something that you can manipulate to your benefit if you
work hard enough. There’s twenty four hours in a day that everyone has yet
people are more successful than others. You just have to manage your time and
resources right and from there the world is yours. That’s why I dare to be
different, so that I bring everything I need to be successful in fulfilling all
of my aspirations and dreams.
Role Models: My role models range from artists, to orators,
to music artists, and so on whether deceased or still alive. Some people I look
up to are Kid Cudi, Kanye West, Ralph Lauren, Raf Simons, Pablo Picasso, Jean-Michel
Basquiat, Martin Luther King Jr., Winston Churchill, Pharrell Williams, Andre
3000 and the list can go on, but my biggest role model is my father. Without my
father I don’t think I would ever be the person I am today. He’s molded me into
a wise and intelligent young man ready for almost any experience thrown at me
since my father prepares me for them. He’s that type of guy to walk into a room
that everyone loves to have around and you still show him deference because of
the type of person he is. I can hope to say someday that I am half the man he
is.
Other Hobbies: Sports, Fashion, watch and sneaker
connoisseur, I enjoy creating visuals and hope to try to direct and make my own
videos, I like collecting vinyl and various other things and then working on my
business ventures such as my brand and blog.
